[This is a question I found asking myself in November 2010]

Given a postcode can you lookup the name a type of an educational institution (primary, secondary, college or university), ideally returning in json format.

[Fortunately I found the answer shortly after, but appears to only be for English inst.]

You can get this from data.gov.uk using http://education.data.gov.uk/doc/school.json?address.postcode={a postcode}

Other output formats are available (rdf, ttl, json, xml, csv)

Here's an example http://education.data.gov.uk/doc/school.html?address.postcode=LE67%203TN

You can run the following query at http://services.data.gov.uk/education/sparql or http://openuplabs.tso.co.uk/sparql/gov-education

PREFIX sch-ont: <http://education.data.gov.uk/def/school/>
PREFIX rdfs: <http://www.w3.org/2000/01/rdf-schema#>
SELECT DISTINCT ?name WHERE {
       ?address sch-ont:postcode "NR18 0QT".
       ?school sch-ont:address ?address.
       ?school sch-ont:establishmentName ?name.
}

It only works, though, for schools and nurseries. I'm not aware of an open dataset which combines this kind of information for all institutions (primary, secondary, college or university).
