Are there datasets or APIs anywhere that map geological and/or historical eras onto date ranges, and vice versa?

For example, the Common Eras service at Southampton provides some support for mapping from year ranges to geological ages, as well as Dr Who instances(?!;-).

I did wonder whether the BBC have an algorithmic way of tagging historical programmes based on historical period, or a service for tagging natural history/science programmes with geological ages?

The code for common eras was done in my own time, but has stalled because it's not my primary focus, but I'd be happy to share the codebase if anybody wanted to take it forward. The idea was something a bit like geonames but for eras. It's php+mysql

You very quickly run into the fact that things are very fuzzy. 99% of the time it doesn't matter but it's easy to get bogged down in edge cases.
